I personally love articles, they are very easy to write and submit. Articles provide links to your website which help with SEO, and they drive targeted free traffic to your site as well.
Information, is what the internet is all about, everyone is searching for online information.
Articles are one way to convey that information. When used in combination with postings to Article Directories, you will have great rewards.
Oh and of course videos are becoming very popular, and a lot of the information even here could be translated through a video but people still want to see text that they can scan for what they are looking for as opposed to a five minute video that may or may not cover the information they are seeking.

Smaller directories tend to be less effective means of traffic generation because most of the submissions are done by traffic seekers not people who actually read the articles.
Remember that Google will filter out duplicate content and usually only allows one copy to rank for a search term, usually the page with the most authority. There for sites like EzineArticles.com gives you a much better chance of ranking highly in the search engines than from smaller directories.
In summary your time is best served writing more articles for the Top Directories.
Two systems for free traffic generation include writing an article which discusses your topic well but is also keyword rich for the topic. Articles that are Keyword rich and have quality relevant content will escalate in the page rank over time. New articles you write can leach off of these high traffic articles to help boost them quickly. This works best at sites like EzineArticles.com where they have the “recentl y submitted” or “related links” posted.
Getting Free Search Engine Traffic
1) Head over to Google Keyword Tool and research the best keywords you want to target.
2) Get as many back links as possible. Websites such as MyArticleNetwork.com and Linkvana.com for a small monthly fee will allow you to access sites which you can get links from.
3) Submit your pages to websites like Squidoo.com / Wordpress.com / Hubpages.com/WetPaint.com etc.
Take your time and write your articles carefully. Enjoy the task and you will demonstrate this to your readers as well. Read articles from the same niche as yours to get an understanding of what others are doing and in so doing improve your personal skills.
